Afterlife

The former enemy of the people
is coming to a theatre near you
The people flock to hear his stories
of politics in the old days
when politicians really believed in something
The former enemy of the people
reflects wistfully on how right he was
And the people laugh as they remember
rushing to the polling stations
to make sure he lost
The former enemy of the people
invites his former political enemy up on stage
where they talk about democratic values
and how debates used to mean something
The former enemy of the people
returns home to find his dustbins
sadly undisturbed by reporters
His show receives a glowing review
and he is labelled ‘a national treasure’

Times do change and memories
Times do change and memories are often short! Interesting poem about politics.

Clever poem
A sharp observation; I can think of a couple of politicians who were trashed by the press when at the frontline then praised a while after they had steppedback. And I like the construction; retiring of the opening line then a series of believable images.
