ADAM & STEVE
We're running out of firewood
And we've only got the Holy Book left in the pile -
It's been there for a while.
Through windy streets, the empty sheets -
All void of meaning -
Can be found there, floating:
Wet from the rain, can they be used again?
Portraits of 'The Beginning',
The truth in them slimming.
The picture of Eve is so quickly thinning.
Where even was Eden?
Was it Adam or Steven?
I've heard that, in the past,
That's what they believed in back then.
We need something to follow,
To bring hope for tomorrow,
In this world of sepia sorrow.
"What was the gender,
Was it they, them, him or her?
We've burnt all the pages,
So we can't know the answer now."
Where have all our heroes gone?
We learnt their words, we heard their songs on the BBC,
But we cooked the tapes when we had to eat.
The modern world, the past was hurled
Into the dustbin,
Our history is rusting.
Looking weak, find us a god to meet.
Rewrite the Book and
Make it look like it did to our fathers,
We need some truth or youth if we will last this.
Compiling pages, we are
Earning our wages.
"What was the age of the gecko that tempted them?"
What can I trust in?
I can't seem to find Him.
This world, so disgusting that
All we have left is ourselves.
