Alone
Poem inspired by Joe Maguire's Irish song beginning "I am alone -
all alone---" Unfortunately my record is now broken.
I am alone- all alone; I am alone
Even the little red telephone
Is dead and quiet; the birds don't sing
Am I going to say anything?
My father went to the public house
He was not as quiet as a mouse
But at eighty-four could not walk
And then there was no-one to talk.
He installed a red telephone
But no-one there at the end of line
Seize life greedily--do it now!
Answer him--each day is like new wine.
