The Long Goodbye - A Tribute to My Mum

You must remember me, I’m your daughter?
Haven’t I always been your main supporter?
Please, humour me, just take a look and see
Because I know you will recognize me

I can’t comprehend this place where you live
When your heart still has so much love to give
But you just look confused and far away
And it makes no difference what I say

What have I done that I must be ignored?
You just sit and look and seem, frankly…bored!
Have I neglected you in any way?
If I have been thoughtless then you must say?

Why is that blank smile frozen on your face?
Does your mind exist in some other place?
Can that be the reason you sit and stare?
To see you like this is what I can’t bear

You were always so strong and high-spirited
Something I know I have not inherited
Your memory now a thing of the past
I think how did this all happen so fast?

Knowing you live in a different sphere
I hope it’s a world where you know no fear
And I must accept that you will leave me
But I know I will miss you dreadfully

Now the end of your life fast approaches
There is no need for any reproaches
You did what you could for the common good
And hope you feel we did all that we should

Coming to the end of this long goodbye
I know I will lose you but must not cry
Leading by example I must be brave
Ready to stand strong and silent at your grave!

My own Mother's Alzheimers snuck up on all of us and she said very little and wasn't really a part eventually. We were never very close but I do miss her . She was quite a good Mum . Very strong but a bit of an egoitist. There are so many things I would have liked to chat with her about and questions that need answering. Too late. I really don't know if I have ever said goodbye to her after she died. I may have to work on that one. Thanks for bringing all these emotions up in me Moya. Mums are incredible people. Ha ha I am one too! Ha ha ;)Pia

Mums are incredible and we don't always know that until they're gone. Fortunately, I did mostly get on with my Mum but that didn't stop me from being embarrassed by some of the things she did. Nor did I always like the things she did. But she was the bravest woman I have ever known and my Mum-in Law was the kindest, so I consider myself fortunate. Moya this could almost be the answer to Katie's letter from her mum. I always say that I missed not having a mum, but I never missed *my* mum because I didn't know her.... But I would like to have known her. I often wonder if we'd have got on, apparently she was a very strong lady and I think we'd have fought bitterly. Gorgeous poem. Well done.

Great words Moya, sad, emotional and extremely well written. I have been lucky and haven't had anyone close with the desease, it must be unbearable.

Jolono, Thank you for your kind words especially 'extremely well written' they have come just as I am consumed by self doubt about having any ability to write at all. It is not nice to see some one close living in a world which you cannot inhabit and not to be recognized by one's own mother is not a pleasant experience. Thank you for your generous comment, Moya

This is so very touching Moya. I was lucky in that my Mum nor my Dad never suffered from dementia or alzheimers. Like Pia, I am not sure I have ever said Goodbye to them. Your poem has awakened many thoughts. Cherries well deserved. Linda

Linda, Thank you for reading and commenting. This poem has been swirling about for some time in my head but I just couldn't get it down. Then I listened to Il Divo and on that CD is a song entitled Mama and although my poem went in a different direction it was what got me started. Thank you so much for reading and commenting. Moya
