Unlock the Gates

Unlock the Gates
The life I’ve lived has passed me by
And now I sit and wait to die
My friends have gone, so why can’t I?
I’m ready now to say goodbye.
There’s no reason to struggle on
When all my friends have long since gone
My life has been a marathon
Upwards towards your echelon
If I die in a state of grace
Will that reserve for me a space
To sit in that heavenly place
Or must I win another race?
Please God grant me this one last thing
Unlock the gates and let me in.
My soul not in a state of sin
It’s a race I know I can win.
Death is now welcomed as a friend,
So let me know what you intend.
Though I pray you will not extend,
A life I cannot comprehend.
You’ve seen the deterioration
That makes life an aberration.
I would trade obliteration,
To free me from desolation!
Where is the laughter, I implore?
There is none in me any more.
My sadness you cannot ignore;
I was never like that before.
So grant me rest and give me peace
Such a kind act could give release
To suffering that needs to cease,
My death, your greatest masterpiece!
