George Evans who's he? I here you ask, my uncle that's who he was. Youngsters of today would have no idea about comedy of the fifties, sixties and seventies. Brilliant for their scripts magical in their presentation and what a sacrifice his wife Jo made forgoing children so George could forge a career in script writing, in the cut throat world of London.
George's career took off in the early nineteen fifties when he met June Whitfield who encouraged him with Bill Wyman to write the script for the Navy Lark, which was to be the stepping stone for Ronnie Barker to forge a career in his own right. Along with doing that he was the personal writer of Jon Pertwee who would go on to play Doctor Who.
He had a magical career, never out of work and although not a household name he wrote for Tommy Cooper, Les Dawson, Morecambe and Wise with who he had a walk on part in several of their productions.
With Vince Powel now his new partner he wrote for Director Tony Parker the sketches for "Love thy Neighbour" and "Bless this House" starring Sid James of the "Carry On" films.
So although not a household name, but, without the likes of George Evans and countless other script writers we would not have had the many successful actors, actresses and comics of today and yesteryear.
When he called time on his writing he enrolled as a lecturer in London to teach budding script writers the art of writing.
During this time he developed Macular Degeneration and Died of Pneumonia in the June Whitfield care unit in Saint Helier Hospital on the 7th of April 2009. So now you know who George Evans was and I'm honoured to have had him as an Uncle.
