CHERRYGRIPE

Do cherries only grow on trees?
I'd like to know.
Are they the food of poets
When they are won?
Not enough are given here
To please all writers of fair words.
A 'reader' may not like the lines I write;
Another might decide to cherrypick my work,
But either way subjectiveness is manifest -
An unpredictable two-edged sword
Severing the "ordinary" from the "interesting"
It seems: It's actions mean
Encouraging the one,
Discouraging the other.
Oh, the disappointment
When one's effort is unpicked,
Having posted it in hope of winning fruit
That signifies acclaim!
Indeed, some folk have columns of the things -
Vast orchards succulent with cherry red!
Though how this happens I shall never know,
Or from whence comes the formula to please the "Ed".
Instead, more often work is doomed to languish
In the galleries of mediocrity -
"Not worth being read again"
By blinkered talent scouts
Eschewing purple prose
As they garner unsung genius
From the garret-gables of obscurity.
They pass, discerning, scrutinising,
Through the portals of the "Cherrypicked" -
And here, subjectiveness is rampant yet again.
But oh, the cherrystone is this -
It's on the Site for all the world to see:
That someone, somewhere seems to think
The work I've written isn't good enough
To dangle on that pesky cherry tree!
