A humble sacrifice

A humble sacrifice
Beaten back, broken pride
The lord our Shepherd shall not hide.
To unjust trial he is lead,
Where liars words convict him said:
“He said he is the son of God”
Harsh words, heavy blows and betrayal hard.
Lead from trial to Pilate’s court,
The Jews eager to see justice they sought.
Pilate offered to set Jesus free,
“Crucify him!” Sanhedrin shouts with glee.
His walk begins to Golgotha’s peak,
His words of truth now others must speak
Thrice our lord is to fall,
The cross grows heavier with us sinner’s Gaul,
Which on and on Jesus does haul.
Nails and hammer pierce his flesh,
His pain our penance to start afresh.
Two sinners on either side are strung,
The holiest of men like garbage flung
To suffer in agony for death to come.
The left man mocks Jesus with a sneer,
While the right begs forgiveness in his ear.
“A place in heaven for you prepared”
Humanities future again repaired.
Vinegar is given to quench his throat
And finally cries out his quavering note.
“Why have you forsaken me?” is his painful cry
As thunder peels across the sky
His final breath release a sigh
And with that our lord does die.
Death’s flag advanced here,
To claim a son, God held dear.
Now we not to live in fear,
For God our lord is so near.
The weight of our sins he took,
So now to heaven we all look.
To see the Angels deep in prayer,
Which we all only hope to share.
The glory of our father’s eternal prayer.
