Driving Ambition (I.P.)

A man in my neighbourhood
does lovely sculptures with wood.
Being an artist par excellence
works on his pièce de résistance.
It is not the carved golden eagle,
nor a model of a birdie or a beagle
and frankly he doesn’t give a toss
for the roughly carven albatross.
They are small beer, mere bagatelle,
cheap trinkets that don’t sell well.
His dreams is, and he’s not alone,
to make a wooden human clone.
It is a plan that suits him to a tee
but has to find a suitable tree.
Today the wood needed is too green
but one day his creation will be seen.
Afraid of being thwarted by a bogey
or being considered an old fogey,
he keeps his ideas to himself
and puts the project on the shelf.
He knows it requires an iron will
but he’s fidgety and can’t keep still.
To wait patiently until the fateful day
may be hard but it’s also a fair way.
