St. Cuthbert's Dying Words

In your monastery, as in any community, the people are mainly good; their intentions are benign and their hearts are kind. But in every soul there is an element of pride; and this can do incalculable damage causing grievous disputes and destroying every semblance of brotherhood. So always be on your guard against that element of pride within your own soul, never allowing it to infect your words and actions, then ultimately it will shrivel up. And be vigilant against the effects of pride within your community. Do not be afraid to criticise the words and actions of others which are prompted by pride – while at the same time expressing your love for those you rebuke. In this way the king of love will reign in your community, bringing peace and harmony to every aspect of your common life.
When in the monastery you gather together to discuss matters of common concern, let your aim always be to reach unanimity. Reaching unanimity not only preserves harmony and goodwill within brotherhood; it is also a test that God’s Holy Spirit has guided your decisions. When people come to you seeking hospitality, never turn them away or treat them with contempt. Welcome them warmly, and provide them with food and shelter, treating them as though they belonged to your community. Thus by your actions you will be proclaiming Christ’s gospel to them. Do not regard yourselves as superior to those brothers who have difficulty in keeping the monastic rule; in God’s eyes merit lies not in a person’s ability to keep the rule, but in their good intentions and sincere efforts to keep it. Remember that even the holiest saint among you remains vulnerable to evil influences. Thus if one of your brethren, or a guest, starts to sow seeds of discord and doubt among you, expel that person at once, before the seeds can germinate and grow.
