Estival Solstice

21st June 2021 is the day of the Summer Solstice
As dawn’s first light skims skies,
revealing an incandescent ball of fire,
rising beyond a Heel Stone stoic,
ancient witness of myth and magic.
Henge built of bluestone and Sarsen,
shadows cast across Salisbury plain,
silhouettes made from ethereal ghosts,
solemn reverence; ancestral Gods look on.
Midsummer dreams built on lore
as a planet’s poll turns and tilts,
Spring fades away to a new season,
beckoning times of harvest and fertility.
Ancient rituals from distant millennia,
Kupala calls to neophytes and sprites,
wreaths of flowers float in water,
blooms of ferns sought in woods.
Couples leap over flickering flames,
futures framed in hands held high.
Hope newly kindled on this pivotal day
brings the promise of life
and renewal, once more.
