A Convict Life
By Paul McCann
Here in my little cell with no company
There’s no one can hear
and there’s no one can see
the miserable life I have to endure
guilty of a crime ,
no mercy for the poor .
I’m too young to be living a life like this ,
I’m so far away from the country I miss .
Locked up in Van Diemen's Land for seven years .
A convict life is not a comfortable one ,
punished and persecuted for what I’ve done.
I rebelled because I’m proud of who I am .
They put leg irons on and I heard the door slam
Isolation in a cell .
no light gets in .
Days pass by without any sun on my skin .
but I don’t know long I’ve been locked up here.
So I’ll just wait for another month or year.
People like me have no existence at all
God knows I’m ready to go now should He call .
