A sleepless Christmas night

In the cold heart of winter
there’s snow on the ground
and icebergs in grocers
approaching £2
I’m chilled to the marrow
and worked to the bone,
they’ve spent my tomorrow
and mortgaged my home
I bought all my dreams
on a cheap feel-good factor
and re-live great scenes
like an out of work actor
I leave home in darkness
my cold body tensed,
while the Old hope their services
might be ring-fenced
The Rich are in furs
while poor pensioners freeze
and frost leaves the birds
stone dead under trees
But they offer us nothing
for easing our plight
and the warm sun of spring
is nowhere in sight
Oh, mist-shrouded steeple
I offer my prayer:
Warm the hearts of your people
and teach them to care
