Back when there were two Germanies,

Two Berlins, two Towers,

Two Ronnies, Two and a Half Men…

I remember…

Tea with Jenny

In our suburban semi,

One of very, very many

Boxes, little boxes, so neat and discrete,

Lining every leafy street,

Laid out like some planner’s treat…

I remember, I remember…

Back when we were

Reckless and feckless,

Aimless and shameless,

Seedy, needy and hopelessly greedy…

Remembering, dismembering…

The wheeling, the dealing,

The schmoozing, the boozing,

The binging, the cringing,

The tweeting, the cheating…

I remember…

All the commuting,

Occasional looting…

Life in the Past Lane.

Drove through Ongar on Sunday on the A414. It has fond memories for me...can't say why. Loved the rhythm and rhyme of this. It thunders along at a cracking pace and makes you smile all the way through. The last line is a classic. Nice one Paul.

but it sounds as if the second half of suburban excess, "back then", might've been more dreamt than was.  Looking back too late in the past lane.  Just the way it breaks.  simon
