"Autumn frame of Mind"

The calendar turns

September taunts

last days of summer

first chills of autumn

kodachrome leaves

orange and yellow

crisp and fallen

under feet to crunch

school year begins

shorelines are quiet

not barren

but not overwhelmed

seagulls remain

unearthing treasures

of retreating

Summer dwellers

day’s light dims 

night treads 

porch swings

and

lightning bugs

beckon

but sweaters are worn

and iced teas are warmed

to welcome this change in the season

When it is winter here you have summer and your winter is our summer. It's like a see-saw a balance. Some people have little jersies for their doggies haven't seen a cat? They must also get cold although your cat is cold enough as it is. "Sweaters" I thought is american?

It Must be Cold if you have to warm your ice tea.

Are your leaves really changing so soon Penny4? I'm not sure whereabouts you are in the US but I was reading about a record heatwave still happening in some places. I enjoyed this lovely poem - wish we had porch swings here. Such a wonderful idea!

Hello Insert, this poem was more of an autumn in New York memory; there the leaves would slowly change by the end of September to golden, as you drove towards the Island or upstate. September would begin warm, with the last days of summer drifting into cooler nights and cooler mornings. I dream of those changing seasons with longing now, living here in Florida where it will be late October or November before I'll see the maple trees changing to golden, but as you noted, with the current heat wave and climate change's longer and warmer seasons, I'm not sure if it will happen even then. We do have porch swings in Florida and some homes on New York's Long Island and in Upstate New York have them too. They are lovely on cool nights to sit and swing slowly and contemplate life.smiley

But my message here is..... I just realized, by reading your works, & I read it.....

I've been influenced in a way by you, not as a poet, but in my story line as I come up the learning curve here...

A world away, yet your poetic, literary fingerprints linger & stay....

Had to look up lightning bugs, do you have fireflies???!!! I have never seen them. We live in a little town by the sea too, but I think it is very different from your lovely home

Yes, fireflies and lightning bugs are the same, just a preference of name.  We'd see them twinkling in evenings; and again this is a New York memory. They'd be blinking in the trees and bushes and in graveyards when we’d walk by or drive past from June through early September, until the cooler days set in.smiley
