In the path of Dorian

Will the winds howl and destroy
Or blow farther out to sea?
Devastation haunts in dreams
And waking brings no relief
The weather on now
24/7
The news is not encouraging
Should I have bought more water?
Do I have enough canned food?
Why didn’t I buy that generator last year?
Too late to worry now
Eminent power outage expected
And 90 degree heat will follow they say
Are there solar air conditioners?
Why don’t I know?
Why did they call it Dorian?
Even I know that sounds ominous
Why do they give Huricanes such strong names?
Why don’t they give them wimpy names?
So they can live down to those
That red symbol is barely moving
Slow and tormenting
1 mile an hour
Why did we move to Florida?
Pointless question
Eyes glued to the screen
That red dot looks small
Almost benign
Not so scary
Until the Doppler pops up
Shows its true size
Cat 5 with winds over 157 mph
Am I in an evacuation zone?
What zone are we in?
It’s not posted on the street sign
Why don’t they post it on the street sign?
You’d think it would be a need to know…
Okay, I’ll look it up
Not a flood zone but
There is a river that runs near here
Should we worry?
Perhaps we should
If the hurricane moves closer
But there are hours to go
Before we’ll know
Hours to worry,
Hours to fear
I hate when hurricane season is here

Have been listening about it
Have been listening about it on the news, it sounds so frightening, your poem makes clear how terrible the waiting is, too. I hope you are OK

Hi Penny,
Hi Penny,
I'm so sorry to hear of this news of yours. I stayed in Florida for four weeks around the St Pete's area and know what their storms can be like...but can't imagine how scary it must be to have 157 mph winds and more coming. I really hope it doesn't get that bad and that you and your family will be okay.
I actually thought you lived in New York for some reason.
You take care and keep safe.
Jenny.
