Girl by the lake, standing
By seashore

See how she stands
on yesterday's grass,
a niveous statue,
eyes wide-open
fixed on a faint pink
stain in the sky, streaked
with blue -
some fleeting image
of a rose-tinted girl
by a frozen lake,
where squawking ducks
scatter and slide,
as she waits for the boy
with the aqua-blue eyes
who has promised
to keep her warm -
a boy whose scarf is the
same shade of blue
and smells of his skin
when he wraps it round
her neck, then teasing,
snatches it away...
but week after week
he does not come, though
she shivers and waits
and her rose-tint fades,
until one day she feels
the warmth on her neck,
that tells her,
he's back again...
Now freeze the frame;
as tomorrow becomes
yesterday
and today eternal,
for the girl who stands
on yesterday's grass,
cast in stone;
