Promise

If I hung on for your promise
My skeleton would slip
Through the noose
All my teeth
Would shine
On the floor
Waiting for your feet
To crush them into powder
And you would shout louder
It’s all about me
It’s not about you
It’s all about the lies
I think should be true
If I hung on for your promise
The gallows wood
Would rot before me
My mouth
Would be open
But silent
Waiting for words
That wouldn’t reach your ears
You’ve never listened for years
But it’s all about you
It’s not about me
It’s all the tired sighs
And what you can’t see
If I hung on for your promise
The crowd would die
Of old age
As the cynics
Collected their winnings
I’d be at the front
Of the queue
Happy that I’ve stopped
Thinking about you
It was all about you
It was never about me
The rope has frayed
I’m frightened and free
