Ugly

I wish I would had known
I was ugly...
I would have stuck my head in
the sand long ago.
I wish I would had known
I was ugly...
My parents never told me so.
Instead I walk down the street,
Twisting my waist.
Striding with pride,
Proud of my face:
My eyes, my nose, my lips
My big 'ole breasts
And my thick hips;
My dark complexion
All cocoa brown.
Full of love and beauty.
Then you turn around
And say that I'm considered
least attractive
Because I'm black.
All the features that I've
inherited
You go and attack,
What makes me who I am
What makes me ME.
But what, sir, gave you the
authority?
How can you compare or try
to rate?
How many years did it take
For you to try and calculate?
Perhaps you forgot
That we're not all the same.
Our features make us unique.
They are our claim to fame.
But please, go ahead...
It's your opinion and how you
feel.
I'm just a black woman
who is keepin' it real.

Dear Belinda
I'm reading around, evening chill`n, catch'n up on some fav's... here @ ABC
Ran across this poem... I'm breath taken, captured, moved, in a soulful way & spiritually humbled & as international non bias, color blind as I would like to think I am..(& I lead a multi culture, multi ethnic team).. I have yet to achieve a high level of awareness as you have so eloquently written herein.
I'm touched, I have learned, in re-looking at my self, I see you.....
Thats a pure intent, heartfelt compliment.....
Thank you...
Kris
