Somewhere I Belong

I remember age six
As my peers played kiss chase
Mid run realising no one was running
To kiss me
An abstract idea that I did not belong
Formed in my mind like a
Fist of acid
That clenched my stomach
And sent fire to my cheeks
Turning, I walked away
To sit in a solitary corner
No one noticed.
Age Eight I remained in the
Corner of the playground
Looking out
Daring myself to jump the hip high wall and flee.
But I remained.
Telling myself comforting stories
That over the wall I would fall
Into a land of tiny people
And there I would be queen.
Playtime ended
And I was flung back to the
Rank of tolerated outsider
As youth gave way to my teens
No longer safe to sit with my back
To the world
I secured myself against a wall
I remained head bowed
Head in book
Safe once again from the truth
That I was somewhere I
Didn’t belong
And now, now my twenties have flown
I am still the caged bird
Trapped in my own silent world
Head bowed behind my books and
Computer screen
Still fearing them
Far away from my childhood home
Still searching for somewhere
I can belong.
