A common man
P K Routray
He is not known in public,
He is a simpleton, common and rustic.
He is not in chair to rule,
He can be taken under any rule as a fool
He is at the mercy for any service,
though he pays to the last pie as a novice
He cannot win a medal in sports or games
but he applauds, cheers, chairs the winners and chants their names.
His memory is very short
He forgets any laurel or insult.
Today to an achiever he puts him high on his shoulder,
on the very next day for the same man’s failure he may throw at him rotten egg and boulder.
TV does not flash his focused picture,
Press does not publish his special feature
He never appears in the focused news,
He is never asked to give his critical views
The heroin on stage with her makeup, glamour and acting
meant not for her hero on the stage but for common man in audience, sitting
the beauty of a beauty queen is on display
only for common man to see and enjoy
Artists and poets have the satisfaction of their creation,
if applauses are given to him by a man common.
Scientists and technocrats and doctors work for common man’s cause
to earn their livelihood and serving to their ego behind their deeds is their sole purpose
Whosoever may be this common man, Let us pray for him,
as without him none can remain motivated and charged, hence let us chant his hymn.
