Looking up
as dawn breaks
clouds lit up with the red hues
shades of crimson give way
as they drift off to reveal
an infinite sky blue and blue
below which the skulls of parched cattle
lay on cracked drought-ridden earth
the bore is quiet
a merciless sun
a disc of death
in this haze where saltbush
leave no shadow
stay still in the windless air
sweat stains the human
whose hopes and dreams
are of a rainy blessing

As you're probably aware, Pia, poetry is an enigma to me, but as it's a competition entry, I felt obliged to read it. I do try to read on comment on people's work, but with the majority being poets, it's difficult for me. I did read your poem three or four times and did understand it. Being as naive as I am about poetry, I would be lying if I said it was brilliant, but I thought it was well written. Anyway, good luck with the competition.

A lot in this, Pia. The scene drawn well, one feels the heat, and of the blessing of water. (We, who so often complain of too much rain.)

PIa, This is very pictorial.
PIa,
This is very pictorial. I think you said you were thinking of Oz when you wrote this because that was what I was thinking of as I read it. I especially liked 'the disc of death'. Good luck

Listening to incessant rain

Listening to incessant rain falling on sodden earth, this poem took me somewhere else. Thought it might be Eritrea, but was interested to see it was Australia. Good luck.

Hi there, Pia. I wish you every success with the competition. An extremely pictorial poem, as has been said already, and it kind of reminded me of Oz, too;-)

Hey Pia,
:) It's very nice.
"a merciless sun
a disc of death" - sounds like a desert, cruel because of the drought, but yet so beautiful, with that severe and cold beauty.
