A poem about Birds for Scratch

He bravely hops over
To where I sit
In my postal stamp-sized garden
I sit still and observe
The fine, perfect feathers
Neatly aligned along his body
Maybe he is a she
I wouldn’t know
Red breast then we know him
Grey and brown
Finer features than most of the other
Tiny birds. He impresses.
Picks a seed from the ground
Which has blown off the feeding tray,
He comes every day
Early morning, late afternoon
I think he is at home
Seems only to be the one
More fragile and slight
than the other smaller birds
The tit mouse, the sparrows
He weaves his way through the undergrowth
And stands right in front of me
On his spindly legs
I don’t move so I can get
A closer look
He never says anything
But returns each day
He is quite a sight to behold

Nice one, Pia, it had a wonderful sense of calm and tranquility. If the bird has a red breast it's a male, the females are grey. There's a robin in my garden that will come and take worms from your fingers.

Yes you know Alvin- I feel quite blessed too that he isn't afraid of me- mind you I would never do anything to harm the birds either. I faithfully put out seeds every day for them. Thanks ;)Pia

Such a sweet poem, Pia, and so true. Robins are quite tame and seem unafraid. In our garden there is a robin, I tend to regard as our own, who lands on the spade while I am still digging the soil. Luigi x

It's interesting, what you say, Pia. Most people don't realise they have a beautiful song, but they sure do;-) Mind you, the birds around my neck of the woods are distinctly quiet of late...waiting for Spring, as are we all. Tina;-)

Hi Tina- I have just come in from sitting in the garden and noticed quite a lot of birdsong, though wouldn't really be able to distinguish so many of them- I will have ears peeled for the Robin. Thanks.. yes waiting for warmer weather but we have marvellous sunshine here and have had for several days though sleet yesterday afternoon. So cold.. I'll send you some life-giving sun with my thoughts. ;)Pia

Hey - it worked, Pia,thank you, but today is a different story. Overcast and cold, mind you, that's a blessing because we have just had our kitchen/conservatory decorated and waiting for new blinds which won't be fitted till Thursday. The room faces south, and without blinds, when the sun is out,I do admit to wishing it wasn't;-) Tina

There's something about Robins that they seem to wait for you to dig a bit of garden and then they appear so cheeky as they look for worms in the fresh earth. Enjoyed this one too. Moya

I've just walked the dog and a cheeky cock robin that follows him around because he scratches the soil up and exposes insects sat not two feet away from me and burst into beautiful song - I often wonder if it's the same bird or a variety of different ones.

That sounds absolutely lovely Walrus. I noticed a birdsong today that may very well be my little Robin. Funny- there's only one single Robin visiting my garden. But otherwise I do not have an ear for the various bird's songs.
