Susan shuffles from
side to side --
the occupied bed
restrictive after
several weeks usage
tubes in all directions
breathing---pain
and other limitations
making their
presence known

two sisters Bonita
and Patricia -- concerned
loving and awaiting
verbal response --
did the operations work?
will she be
able to speak again?

Susan’s ears hear --
glazed eyes
focus on silhouettes
a tickle forms
inside her mouth
a jumble of words
difficult to form
but she must respond
somehow -- aha
trembles then
sits up looks around
oodles of love for sisters
then roars like a lion.

This is just lovely.Sisters have secret signs.And a lion is never out of place.Great rhythm and such an unexpected, yet fitting ending for sisterly love.

Lovely piece, Richard, well-earned cherries - a very difficult subject to write fluently about, but such circumstances often wring beautiful pieces from our overrought minds. as I've said before, writing is very therapeutic.

When dad was in WW 11 in England with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) he was issued a patch with a Russian phrase for airmen in the event they were shot down over Russia---it said--Ya Anglichiann--which meant, "I am English." Dad was seconded to British Intelligence for two years (I think my spelling of the second word is suspect). Richard

That generation lived a dozen lives compared to most Richard.

Yes scratch, and there was a real feeling of comradeship as friends and family members could not wait to sign up and go overseas to fight for freedom. Dad and five brothers all joined the Canadian forces and thankfully all returned home. We used to laugh about Uncle Joe being a mailman, until we learned only the bravest men dared to drive their motor cycle to the front lines and beyond to deliver mail to the troops. He got blown off his cyle and suffered moderate lung damage, but did live to around 75 and had two children. Richard.
