This sea exists
in motion, motiveless
but for being
there to catch the light
that dances over
and beneath waves
of odd joys
and bursts of grief.
And tears are fish
caught in weeds
that cling to coral sorrow
of the living
until sleep wraps
the night like a shroud
closing darkness
on gladness and sadness
without prejudice
ending and beginning
