Closer

Funny, I feel closer to your dead body with a cigarette in my hand
they connect me to the grief
I tend to forget
in the middle of one of my whirlwind affairs
with virtue and fresh breath.
Funny, smoking brings to mind the stiff little arc of your mouth
when we turned you over
the operator telling us to perform
mouth to mouth
and me saying
“but she's cold.”
Funny, I go back to them over and over,
my jilted cigarettes
kissing them to my lips
like last requests.

In the middle, not in middle
In the middle, not in middle.
Otherwise, a brilliant, precise, and original poem that sticks in the mind after reading.

The cigarette is a powerful metaphor and carries you through.Another thing Innes you make both death and smoking seem so romantic! How absurdly refreshing.
