She placed the book
on the bedside table
fondled the navel jutting
sharply like an extra nipple
from her ripening belly.
As the morning cicadas sang
the memory of the chill
dark passion of one
Autumn night cast out
the old meanings.
He had not minded
the soft down on her lip
had turned and smiled
giving old thanks
for a newly begotten word.
