When from your crate you burst
that had borne you by road, by
rail, by water to Queenhithe,
to the city’s spectacular
disregard, a drudge’s life,
by St-Martin-in-the-Fields crypt,
the summer tourists flown, knife-
clad bloods, stoop-shouldered,
weighted down by front, hollow
boats, roaming the bare red-
leafed street stare dumbstruck,
sunlight fast declining to dusk
when from your crate you burst.
