Then:
We stood in balconies
wiping dust off thin metal ropes
one
by one
carrying heavy loads of laundry
across hallways
hanging them in the breeze
where they could breathe in
the Cairo air
Now:
We push everything into
the large gaping mouths
of machines
everything spinning
in heated circles
drying
without ever seeing
the sun.
