The Hare in the Middle

A bridge reflected,
a weir beyond –
shooting water down each end;
stroll the bank,
tiddlers and dragonflies,
a swish of large fish,
walk through buttercups
– glittering gold,
along broad-bean field
(black-eyed flowers),
then wide ride
with sea of rape on one side,
and to the left, a copse
with nettles, and froths of elder:
Haring out of the rape
across the ride,
to quickly escape
to the other side,
it’s long legs pound,
alert its ears –
where nettles abound
it disappears.
We cross the valley,
a cottager insists
no path now exists
through her garden –
undergrowth stings,
as we search to get past,
but must take to the road
face cars rushing fast
for a mile or more
… until back to the buttercups,
the river, the bridge,
and parked car.

I was out the other day and noticed the buttercup. Is there anything more yellow than buttercup? A nice stroll, Rhiannon, you capture well. HW

A lovely poem. Nice flow and probably more difficult to write than we imagine, as it reads so easily.

Hi Rhiannon
Hi Rhiannon
Lovely visuals - and what a contrast when you had to use the road for your walk.
