Drivers

My world is full of drivers
Alone inside their spaceships
I watch them going by
See the furrows of their faces
Eyes anchored to the road
But the mind is free to sail
In the winds of their detachment
They reach the promised lands
Lush forests, rivers of reflection
Radio songs propel them to the
Farthest planets of their own design
The road narrows, back they come
Making flying enemies as they
Steer into the portal of their day
There are firebirds on the bends
You can see their shining eyes
All the deadly desperados
Who think they’ve won the prize
And the road is never open
It chokes them and it pinches
I see the toxic torment on their faces
Each day the same crusade in
The retreat of their vessels
Still they fade little by little
And some of them are ghosts
Staring ahead with bloodless skin
Unblinking eyes and minds with
Tattered sails that voyage no more
I see them going back and forth
Endure to reach the planets of their
Own design there’s hope but
Many will just drive and drive
To live out their lives as space debris

you've got it. Driving to me is a chore. But there is different tribes and I see them on the roads too.

I'm glad you've written this
I'm glad you've written this piece Jane. I agree entirely with your poem which is why I gave up driving over twenty years ago...mind you cars do come in handy at times, but only if my partner is driving.

The trouble is that the
The trouble is that the driving is destroying lush forests. The more people run away the less there is to escape to. The last verse is so hopless, a life that started off aiming at the stars can't reach them and becomes debris which brings down those hopeful ones coming after

It seems like a metaphor of the rat-race of living with material goals that are so elusive and unfulfiling, and the independence of one's own car giving a fragile feeling of success and wealth and freedom temporarily. Rhiannon

Thanks for picking this theme
Thanks for picking this theme up and writing with it, Jane. So true. Cars compartmentalise people and encourage the now largely pointless vestige of murderous competition that's within us all. Bus and metro for me.
