Toddler opening presents

When you are one
it’s really fun
to tear off the paper
to find what’s inside there.

A boo – k, oh good:
they open and shut
and you can stagger about
to give them to someone, or hide them
– they’ve got squiggles
and pictures inside them.

Some bricks to try to stick together,
wriggle them around until they grip,
and tug and pull until they slip
apart again from one another.

And then that bag they put the wrapping paper in
–it’s meant to go out to the (recycling) bin,
pull the bits out
scatter them about
– more for noisy rip and tear
a snowy carpet everywhere?! …

Delightful, Rhiannon.  When mine were little I often used to think they'd have been happier with that wrapping paper bag than with any of the presents!

Lovely Rhiannon - as are the pictures. Is that a grandhcild of yours? I think my boys both enjoyed the boxes most of all at that age!

Thank you. Yes we have the privilege of for a while having the family with 2 little ones living in the what was the in-laws' annexe.

Young children and pet cats prefer the wrapping paper to the actual presents inside. Happy New Year to you :)

And to you too. Thank you. Cats must make more mess even! I remember one of mine as a crawling baby getting hold of a toilet roll - then you realise how much paper is in a toilet roll! Rhiannon

Made me smile, you are so wonderfully wise at knowing/remembering how a young child sees things! I loved the brisk "oh good" and remember well how my son was not remotely interested in the content of books which I had taken so long to choose, much more in making them into little caves or big crocadiles :0)

Your lovely photo, with the little one's mouth in a perfect O is so special!

And the feeling of happy chaos from the finding and ripping up paper everywhere, I remember that, too. Thankyou so much for sharing the present of your Christmas

Thank you, Di, I hope you have a happy new year too.

The sound and feel of paper ripping is lovely to a child isn't it? and so easy to do! She is funny about books, loves opening and shutting, but not very interested in being read to or recognising the pictures unless they are very big and simple sometimes. She staggers around with hefty books of her parents and DVDs anything like that she can find, and enjoys giving things to you, and then receiving them back and going on another journey!

Thank you, yes, the years pass quickly as you get older and can look back so far!

And yes, many great presents from the Lord, and children/grandchildren are a wonderful present but also hard work and responsibility and can bring heartache sometimes and need of earnest prayer for them. Like many gifts. Which is the greatest present of all - that we can have One to whom to pray and accept us and our prayers because of Jesus coming and going to Easter! Rhiannon

Super sweet! The structure creates a great reflection of how a child speaks. And this is my library employee side talking, but the "boo-k" tickled me a lot.

Thank you again. Interesting to have the library experience. This little one has been very slow bothering to speak, and has contented herself a lot with expressive actions, and grunts to get what she wants, but the words are coming slowly now, and she was pleased yesterday when I showed her I was glad to get a verbal 'ba- ba' not just a wave goodbye!.
