His face is the waves of shipwreck
slants and slashes, all going down
while hand light-holds a brush to make
blank paper open up like dawn
to possibilities of joy
brought life by sights behind his eyes
that on the surface bleak survey
those around, who to him despise
one who can't fit any job-slot
which without his curse of a gift
fill most days, never knowing what
Hells drag him down, or Heavens lift
to force out their skim of beauty
moving his soul as if in dance
till with a worshipper's duty
he shares his Love in colour, paints

This is marvellous.
I do love this one. Lots to admire here.
"His face is the waves of shipwreck
slants and slashes,"
is absolutely terrific.
Well done.

Does he live somewhere near
Does he live somewhere near you. I found more of his colourful paintings, but no photo of him, which intrigued me after you description in the first two lines!
I'd love to be able to paint, but I suppose it must feel like when you feel staisfied with word arrangements you've arrived at. Rhiannon

What a great tribute to this
What a great tribute to this humble artist Di. I've just been on the internet and checked out his other paintings. You describe well his talant. I think that first stanza sums him up perfectly.
Congrats on the gold cherries too. Well deserved.
Jenny.

I looked him up, too. This is
I looked him up, too. This is a marvellous poem that really conveys the strength of his work. His paintings of trees particularly struck me - there's one called The Ghost Tree which I can't quite get out of my mind. Great work Di!
