Dandelion’s parachute lifts the seed
to travel far;
sticky goosegrass*, hooked barbs of burs
cling to clothes and hairy furs;
berries – food-wrapped seeds are taken,
eaten and the seed forsaken
elsewhere ;
and aeroplane-like wings
float and scatter …
Could you design such varied and wonderful things?

* Cleavers

I was up, up and away with the dandelion parachute. Thanks for transporting me with your poem, Rhiannon. I imagine the answer to the question at the end is almost certainly no. Mother Nature always wins. Paul :)

Thank you, Paul. I enjoyed thinking of the different ways they 'get away'!

There is such intricate skill and design of 'irreducible complexity' ie whole parts don't work if not complete and would be a hindrance. Mother Nature can't direct and create, but indicates the whole inter-dependent scene! Rhiannon

I agree with Paul. Nature takes itself wherever, and you can never control where it will take seed next.

Thank you, Jenny. There are often surprises in the garden aren't there! Maybe some seeds get buried too far awhile and then get higher, or just the birds 'plant' or the wind brings … Rhiannon

The dandelion has always fascinated me - sure it must be "heavier than air" so how on earth do they float like that? Defying gravity? The wonders of nature.

Really enjoyed your poem, food for thought.

Thank you, Tom. Isn't the 'parachute' of hairs on the dandelion seed acting like hang-glider riding the thermals? These designs and mechanisms are indeed wonderful, and are often complex but would be a hindrance if not complete. Rhiannon
