Unless it first shall be earned
It can’t be returned.
Then have we loved insincerely
When was it priced too dearly?

I find it really remarkable that you wrote this within the given constraints, I think you must be gifted I have always thought of you as more an intellectual looks now you are really very versatile. Perhaps write more poetry Dougie? Although I know it produces small results with much effort, tell me about it.

Thanks Nolan; and very happy that you quoted Blake - one of my revered poets. With the short poems - Haiku's, Tankas, even (hardest of all for me) the Nordic Kennings, I like the way the idea becomes condensed into a few lines - the challenge is making some sense of that idea. I was also pleasantly surprised that my effort was rewarded with golden cherries.

Hi Dougie,

I can imagine a lot of hard thinking has gone into this Tanka poem. The rules to me don't make it easy at all. I admire you for having a go, and putting together an engaging read.

Thanks Jennifer. I'm suffering imposter syndrome - as in I find any short poem form easier than a longer one; and I'm still struggling with my Villanelle! But I was very grateful for the golden cherries, being in the company of such accomplished poets - and I mean that!

Note to anyone. I might have menitioned him Before? Samuel Manashe, the outstanding master of the very short poem - Bloodaxe have a collection of his poems.

I find your comments interesting because in a very compact form and with given restraints, in the end this is exactly what makes it so beautiful. Myself, I would rather use my own structure I want that freedom I try writing mostly lyrical poetry.

I've been thinking about it everyone wants to make everything as long (and boring) as possible where really one should cut as small as possible, cut to the bone for anything, everything. Any mathematician will know. And also looking at prose, given a piece it is much harder making something longer, it works much better when making something shorter, and usually is better!

You do sound very formal though, each to his own, but don't forget to have fun!

I agree with the benefit of being brief and concise. And such usually has beauty then. I've read this a few times, and enjoy its flow, but I tend to see the various concepts/statements, but can't make the connect between them I'm afraid.

That unearned love can't be returned, I question. On the human level, we might be ashamed to receive love we haven't earned, but if we do accept it, we can love the giver? Rhiannon
