STILL LIFE

Caravaggio painted a basket of fruit

fresh and delicious, damp with dew.

Goya chose a plate of fish, sin dish.

Vincent’s wax like fruit in thick brush

strokes hardly sparks an appetite.

Monet’s oysters; fresh as sea breeze.

Paul Gaugain cheers up with three

supping puppies on a fruit laden table.

Cézanne’s basket of apples rock and roll.

 

A twenty-first century still life electric

A keyboard for a table: items eclectic,

dormant smart-phone without its cable.

Car keys for freedom: PC offers an oyster

That's clever! Seems to symbolise how we do not live in the moment, do not actually hold or smell things how we used to. "still life electric" is a brilliant phrase. The two references to oyster also, one all about the senses, the other all about knowledge. Really enjoyed and made me think. Even your title, it IS still Life, but not as those artists knew it

I have wanted to paint a still life using broken phones, and electric stuff mixed with organic items but typically  I haven't got around to it yet. This IP reminded me and I decided to write a stil life instead.

There are some amazing still life paintings I chose a few from well known artists

I'm pleased it made you think about 'modern' still life

I hink painting a stilllife is probably the first project at art school as an exercise in composition and drawing skills. There are some stunning still life paintings created over the last 500 years or so using a great variety of subject matter. I just picked a few from famous artists. 

If its OK for Andy Warhole to paint cans of soup I guess painting clapped out phones and computers is valid :)

How the reader reads through this illustrious list wondering what will be at the end. We end up with a still life that is both a lot less still (because of the electric energy) and a lot less life (because it's not life-sustaining food, but objects). A poignant contrast and such a fun read!

Very thoughtful comment! you have homed in on the contrast between organic and hardwear subjects.

I have to admit I prefer the subjects used over the centuries, but also modern life offers subject matter.

I hope one day I will actually get around to painting a still life using old phones and things mixed in with more traditional subject matter. 

I don't often respond to IPs but this one really got me thinking, Thank you!
