Softly glide, liquid wondrous

through lazy days; how fragile

your plight on pond and lake,

rays rippling beneath hasten

you on,

 

then, in dreamy moments we

see you're full of purpose; yet

impetuous, most mischievous,

flimsy elegance trips the nimble

dance.

 

Traverse for a time; filled with

peril, imminent cravings seek

morsel. Cavort in a whirl if you

will...skim under peaceful skies;

but stay vigilant Water Striders

to watchful eyes.

Beautiful descriptions of life Jenny! Like "Cavort in a whirl if you will" Almost weekend and it is month-end too. Shops will be a madhouse.

I think I've usually called them Pond Skaters, but they are fascinating, aren't they? Looks as graceful as flying! Rhiannon

Yes, you're right about them being called Pond Skaters Rhiannon, I too knew them as that. Decided to go with the video name which inspired me. They truely are fascinating as you say.

You made me laugh Turlough. laugh Had this vision of tiny little skates on the end of there flimsy legs...if that's what you call them. wink

If pond skaters took to drinking whey protein shakes they could become our planet's dominant species. I think it's worth a try.

I like elegant Jane. These little insects are so delicate and their life is so short, it was a pleasure to capture them in this poem, that was a lot of fun to write.

Thank you so much for your kind comment Di. I just found that video so amusing. The words: Skating Without Ice was what first gave me the idea for the poem, then it went from there and just seemed to come together.
