Daybreak Dawn

7am and the alarms shrieks
Dawn groans, shifts and opens her eyes
She’s been feeling shit for weeks
So there in her bed she lies
She wants an end to council tax, to bills and coffee and pain
She wants an end to wind, adverts, headaches and rain
She wants fish without bones, wants to sell her wedding dress
She wants a happy pill that will end her loneliness
Dawn looks out of the window and wonders where he life went
She used to be happy and free before work and cancer and rent
Took her youth and soul and wrung out the joy
Before the frown took over and the urge to destroy
Now she hates every day, hates the washing and drains being smelly
Hates shopping, breathing, neighbours (both the real and the ones on the telly)
Hates people, radio, shoes, people who knock on her door
With milk or leaflets or gas meters or good news direct from the lord
So for one last time, she’ll really let rip
Get out of bed, get washed and dressed, at last get a grip
She’s had enough of pain, depression and feeling run down
For one night only folks, Daybreak Dawn hits the town
She makes her favourite breakfast, then has a hot bubble bath
Listens to her favourite cd, sees friends for lunch and a laugh
In the afternoon she drives around her favourite places
She’s her school, her old house, her old friends, her favourite faces
In the evening she gets dressed up to the nines
Then heads out on the town for the best dinner and wines
Her long-suffering boyfriend’s wallet will stretch to
She laughs long and loud, then they all head to the disco
They all giggle, boogie, limbo and drink up to their necks
By 3am she’s feeling the exhausting effects
Of too much rich food, fine wine and thunderbird cider
And in the cab heading home, she can feel the cancer inside her
At home boyfriend Dan carries her gently inside, as she asks how
‘You can still love me like this’ Dan replies ‘Silly cow’
As Dan tucks her in, Dawn says ‘I’ve had a fantastic day’
Dan replies ‘good’ then searches for something clever to say
Instead he whispers good night and kisses her cheek
Dawn tries to sit up but is feeling too week
But she smiles and dozes as outside a new day is dawning
Dawn drifts off wondering if this will be her last morning
