Heroes!

Heroes!
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes
They come before us in all manner of disguises
The young men sent to a foreign land to fight
Come home, via Brize Norton, by early light!
Heroes that give to their country their sight
Whether or not the cause is right
Give of their limbs or even their life
A hero can be a dead soldier’s grief stricken wife!
Heroes can be the fatherless children comforting their mother
Or the sisters, smiling bravely, yet fearful for their brother
The bomb disposal expert who gives freely of his safety
So that others will be free from the danger he faces daily
Heroes deliberately put themselves in harm’s way
So that their brothers in arms will live another day!
Heroes do not leave roadside bombs to kill and destroy
The best of our young men, so many…with the visage of a boy!
They signed up so must fight in some foreign field
The cause may be lost but the politicians refuse to yield
Bring our boys home, those that remain
And put an end to their mother’s pain
They have lived long enough with their fears
Be brave and face up to any opposition jeers
That’s all the courage a politician requires
So do it, do it now… before it backfires!
If you delay you put at risk your personal reputation
And you could feel the white heat of a very public humiliation
Because you, Prime Minister, are there only by our grace and favour
And it wouldn’t take much for the voters to revert back to Labour.
Heroes who have been injured or damaged in any way
Must depend not on charity, the country must pay
For the remainder of a life that has been drastically changed
And all hopes and dreams must not be exchanged
For a limited half life spent in pain and regret
We know full well what is owed and we must pay the debt!
