The Girl of the Ivory Tower

Once there was a girl who lived in an ivory tower. She was always asleep.  One day she woke up to find that the walls of her ivory tower were crumbling. She tried to rebuild it but no matter how hard she tried the walls continued to crumble.  Soon the tower was nothing but a pile of chalk on the ground.  The girl of the ivory tower sat down and cried.  She cried so much that she soon found herself floating in an ocean of her own tears.  The more she thought about her ivory tower, the more she cried. And the more she cried, the more treacherous the ocean of her tears became.  The sky turned dark and the girl of the ivory tower was swept far away. 

For days she was carried along the currents; through harsh winds and stormy weather.  Until one day the sky turned light again.  Her ocean of tears ran dry and the girl found herself lying on the ground where her ivory tower once stood.  All that remained was a lump of chalk.  She picked it up and made it into a necklace.  The girl of the ivory tower looked out into the distance.  She watched the sun rise beyond the hills and realised she could not recall any sunrise before it. 

​With the lump of ivory tower swinging from her neck, the girl set out on an adventure.  She wandered across fields filled with hundreds of flowers, and through forests with trees that seemed to touch the sky.  She darted across river banks and ran barefoot along the hillside.  The girl of the ivory tower had never felt happier.

As the sun began to set, the girl reached the sea shore. She watched as the waves ebbed and flowed and her mind drifted back to her beloved ivory tower.  She reached for the lump of chalk that hung around her neck but she was surprised to find that it was no longer there.  She was even more surprised to find that she was not sad that it was gone.  The girl looked out into the distance and watched the sun set on the horizon.  She knew she did not need her ivory tower any more.
