THE LEGEND OF SWEET MARY’S GHOST

Looking out at stormy sea,
the rolling waves, the water deep,
there something there I can’t explain
beyond the rocky shores of Maine.
I try to say it’s fog I see,
that a stormy nights will eyes deceive,
but there’s something out there on the waves,
something not seen there in the day,
floating above, walking maybe
across the waves upon the sea.
I’ve heard the tale it is Mary,
a maiden fair, a hearts delight
who died at sea one stormy night.
It was back in 1793, so the legend is told
of sweet Mary and of her child,
a child just 10 weeks old,
and of John, her love, a sailor bold
who set sail to cross the ancient sea
to come to the land of liberty desiring to be free.
The seas were rough. The seas were cold
and this is how the story is told…
There’s a pale white figure walking there,
a woman’s face, long flowing hair
and seems upon the wind a song;
she sighs for her love and child now gone,
forever lost when the ship went down.
Folks assume that all were drown,
John and the child and the lady fair
but there’s something in the night out there;
a woman’s face, long flowing hair,
a pale white figure walking there
across the waters of the sea.
They say it’s the ghost of sweet Mary
searching for her child and John.
She walks on water all night long.
