I bought a purple hat today;
somewhat Bohemian, as if to say,
here goes an individual
of refinement and distinction '
you may meet her in some gallery
or country garden party
with strawberries, a string quartet
and conversation arty
then wonder why on earth
you've never seen her round before
amazed she's still available
for moonlight serenading,
grandiose balls, regattas
and romantic promenading.
Or maybe midday readings
in a side-room of the library,
the dark side of the matinee,
the European ballet
eyes sparkling in the spotlights
and her hair just ripe for stroking
that hat perched quite oblivious
to passions she's evoking
and when you press for personals
she will simply say:
"I've just left my husband
and I bought a purple hat today.
