'How do you do' .. How do you do what, exactly?!

What is the origin of that expression?
I use it often, with authentic intention.
When approaching a person who's introduced to me,
I move forward, stick a hand out and hear myself say,
'How do you do', then regret it straight away.

It sounds a bit pompous in this day and age,
also nosy and stuffy but l will never change.
I love meeting people from all walks of life, however do wash your mits to keep those bugs out of sight ..

When l meet anyone, at all, l am so enthusiastic and probably seem a bit gushy but l really mean it! How do you do .. then they usually take a step back! It's generally the young yinz xx thank you for reading xx
