Come a little closer to the fire,
we’ll change places,
I’ll put my back to the door,
you can watch,
guard my back.
Speak a little louder for the wind,
the walls are cracked,
we’ve put sacks on windows:
we are safe
from some things.
‘There is a crack in everything,’ he said.
I believe that, and you should too.
There is the yellow line of sunrise,
and the fault in the mirror.
There is good and bad in both of these.
The mirror’s fault flatters us,
the day’s start line begins the race
- a complicated word for you and me.
Just take a little of this tea,
there’s no coffee:
I do not care for its spark.
We are tired,
we should sleep.
Leave your gun beside the fur,
it’s still handy.
I am not your enemy:
we are lost,
not alone.
The crack’s to let the light in, he said.
You believe that, and I will too.

Ewan, I never got him. All
Ewan, I never got him. All his songs felt morose and depressing, and then one day when I reached a certain age, a light shone and wow I was a Cohen fan! A true poet of our time.

Mate, I was nearer 50! But then I matured much later than most. Come to think about it I think I may still be maturing...

I've been a great fan of Cohen since the early seventies. If asked to pick a favourite song, impossible so many lines from so many songs are quite evocative. Maybe we should have picked him for the Nobel prize.
A fitting tribute and nicely done.
