I've Got The Best Sister In The World!

I was having my morning cup of tea, when my sister joined me.
“Do I have to go to school today, Char?” She asked.
I laughed. “Well, you could stay home, and watch telly and eat ice cream all day. But I don’t think Mum would be best impressed.”
“Is she home?”
“No,” I answered. “She’s gone to work already.”
Ellen smiled. “Well, in that case, I’ll stay home.”
I laughed again. “Let me just finish this cuppa, and I’ll drop you off on my way to work.”
Ten minutes later, I was bundling Ellen, along with her school bag, into my car. Along the way to her school, I tried to engage her in conversation, but she was really quiet, and by the time we were at least two miles away from the school, her face had gone as white as a ghost. I was getting very worried.
I stopped the car. Ellen grabbed her bag and tried to leave my car quickly, but I pulled her back in.
“Ellen, what’s the matter? Why have you gone white in the face? Are you ill?”
Ellen sat there for a few seconds, then she said: “Okay, but promise you won’t tell Mum.”
I put my hand where my heart was. “I promise.”
“There’s these three girls in my class. Melody, Kat and Lisa. They keep picking on me and my friend Hayley. They sit behind us in class and kick the backs of our chairs, and pull our hair when Miss Collins isn’t looking. And yesterday, they pushed me over outside in the playground, and I grazed both my knees.” Ellen looked as though she was going to start crying.
I put two and two together. “Is this why you didn’t want to go to school this morning?”
Ellen nodded. “They told me if I told anyone, they were going to beat me black and blue.” She looked outside, and gave a little gasp.
I looked where she was looking. There were three girls set apart from the rest of the kids milling about the playground, staring at my car. Two had brown hair, one had blonde hair.
“Are those Melody, Kat and Lisa?” I asked.
My sister nodded.
“Stay in the car,” I said. I opened the door.
“Where are you going?” Ellen asked, but I didn’t answer her. I marched off across the playground towards Melody, Kat and Lisa.
“You been picking on Ellen?” I asked.
“Who are you then?” The one in the middle, the blonde one, asked. “Are you Ellen’s mum?” They all fell about laughing.
“No actually, I’m Char, her sister. And I’m here to tell you to stop bullying my sister.”
The girl in the middle, obviously the ringleader of the gang, shrieked with laughter even louder. That was when I got mad. I reached over, and grabbed her by her long hair, and pulled her really hard into a headlock. She started whimpering in pain then. Her two friends backed away.
“There. It’s not nice when someone picks on you, is it?” I said to her. “Now, I’m warning you, leave my little sister alone, or else I’m going to do to you what you’ve been threatening Ellen with. I’m going to duff you up.” By now, the rest of the kids in the playground had stopped what they were doing. As I released the girl, and turned to go back to my car, there came an eruption of applause and cheers. I opened the car door. Ellen was sat there, staring at me in shock, she got out of the car and ran off without saying anything to me.
Later on that day, I came home from work before Mum and Ellen were home. About ten minutes after I got home, Ellen came through the back door. I was in the kitchen, making myself a cup of tea. She came running up to me and threw her arms around my waist in a hug.
“Than you so much Char! Melody, Kat and Lisa left me and Hayley alone all day. They told Miss Collins what you did. But the whole class stuck up for me and Hayley, and said they were lying, you never did it. And they stayed out of our way. Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!”
Ellen beamed at me, as Mum came through the back door.
“Guess what, Mum!” Ellen squealed at Mum. “I’ve got the best sister in the world!”
