The Station Hotel

The tourists who came

to our town on vacation

always chose to lodge

at the hotel by the station.

 

Though it was adjacent

to a suburban railway

it was not a factor

that made people stay away.

 

Described as compact,

it was rather small:

it had two bedrooms,

a lounge and the hall.

 

But the main attraction

was available outdoor,

in the back garden

there was a dance floor.

 

The uneven surface,

made with concrete,

didn't deter youngsters

from shuffling their feet.

 

Every youth thought

that they had a chance

to find the right partner

and true romance.

 

Some of them did

realise their dream

and felt like the cat

who licked the cream.

 

But not Gloria

who thought of herself

to be irresistible

yet was left on the shelf.

 

Shrugging her shoulders

she continued to have fun

and came time and again

to this place in the sun.

I can see this station. In my head. Nice.

I remember vividly how it was then but everything has changed. The hotel is now a bar and the railway line, no longer suburban, is part of an international route. The dancing floor, on which I was one of the youngsters looking for romance, has vanished without trace. Tourists still go; the town has developed but still retains its old character. It now offers alternative hostelries.
