A walk along a roadside nature reserve
Only in Norfolk, you might find in the first weeks of July
the early plums, green to red mix with the soft green leaves.
A sudden rush of Sweet Peas takes my breath, intwined in
the hedgerow, aside some soft lilac flower balls, I'm sure
they are garden flowers, thrown onto the ground for colour.
The Camomile flowers mix with Daisies, Buttercup and Broad Beans
along the overgrown edge of the field, opposite the trail of poppies,
it's an english trail of colour, raised by the nearly golden corn.
Later past the next sign - a perfect combination, the folded wings;
I watch beset by fear, the bat, almost a clutched heart shape, sleep.
He's speckled pale green wings cover him entirely. He must have
lost his dark barn, his once upon home to fly here, to sleep rough.
.
I'm eight miles from civilisation: such as we know it, the silence
is golden, only the traffic who pass univited, bring it into focus.
The bat doesn't move, he is caught up in his sleep. I wish
it was all so easy. Only it isn't.
