1) We admitted that the Spirit of God had power over us — that our lives had become unprofitable, that we were giving too much money away and spending too much time in the service of others.
2) Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3) Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the world, the flesh and the devil.
4) Made a searching and fearless effort to go through the motions of living a moral life, but always to remain absolutely selfish.
5) Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being that we were much too serious in our Christian commitment.
6) Were entirely ready to have the devil remove all these defects of character.
7) Easily allowed Him to remove our shortcomings.
8) Made a list of all the charities we had ever given money to, tore it up, and made a decision to put our families first and to spend all our money on things that we enjoyed, like having a decent holiday.
9) Stopped talking to people about Jesus, except when people talked about him to us, so that we might tell them that religion was a personal matter and that they shouldn’t talk about it.
10) Joined an ordinary church where we weren’t accountable to anyone, and if we did something wrong we didn’t have to admit it.
11) Avoided prayer and meditation to reduce our
conscious contact with God, making sure we would never receive knowledge of His Will for us or the power to carry that out.
12) Having had a spiritual deadening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to all Christians, and to warn them if they ever became over enthusiastic.
