In through the door - flurry of tweed jacket
And the aftershave the wife bought for Christmas.
Chair out, sit down, case open, and a packet
Of cigars tucked in the drawer for later.
Terribly good weekend, had people up;
Rode with the dogs most of Sunday morning.
Then at the pub, showed them the beer to sup,
And good, traditional roasted beef for dinner
Large report to be read, one to be wrote.
Letters, letters skimming on the leather
He insisted on having in order to promote
His image as established mover and shaker.
Is there a Rotary meeting this week?
Could do to chat with Roger and Miles,
Fellow who’s wife has the terrible shriek,
But can sink G & T like a heroine.
Leans back in the chair upholstered in red,
Breathes, relaxes and notices the bills.
Thinks of Bermuda, a four-poster bed,
Sets to with a vengeance - earns the next one.
