continuing the series on the months inspired by Eifion Wyn’s series in Welsh:
Crisp, dewy morning,
glittering webs festoon
and decorate the hedgerows;
shortening days, but often
a dazzling afternoon –
watch weary children drag
homeward, morning’s sweatshirt,
stuffed in schoolwork bag;
swallows, martins skim around
– last long feast, before
the journey massive, southward bound,
withdrawing from this scene
of cooling, wilting – tinging
autumn hues emerging;
rowan berries brightly glow,
crane flies flutter, fluster, blunder;
tractors, trailers trundle
down the lanes, the traffic slow:
potatoes scooped from under earth
(crisp packets soon to fill?),
apple orchards yield their worth
for bowl or pie or cider mill.

Gosh, Rhiannon...you have
Gosh, Rhiannon...you have just described exactly what is going on in my neck of the woods...right down to those apples which I have a glut of, plus pears. Mind you, the wasps have got to a lot of them first. We also have a bumper crop of potatoes this year, and they are gorgeous. So very buttery. The martins, swifts and swallows are very active here, too. Especially late afternoon scooping up all the flies, but I guess, as you say, they will be starting their long journey any day now. I am looking for them to gather on the power lines which is what they normally do when they are ready for the off. I love too, your picture of the Rowan berries. I don't have too many of those, but I do have masses of giant rosehips from my Rose Rugosas, and as illustrated by your photo, that red makes a wonderful splash against the green and the blue.
Finally, the line about the kids and those sweatshirts really made me smile. So very true...as they walk passed my front garden each day at 3.45 after being dropped off by the school bus.
Gosh, and I forgot to mention those pesky crane flies. Can't stand them when they fly around indoors Some wonderful aliteration in this line, and they certainly do fluster, flutter, blunder.
Really enjoyed this lovely poem, Rhiannon. One of my many favourites of yours.

This is so beautiful Rhiannon, you've captured natures bounty of the season so well. But then I love coming on these picturesque journeys with you.
By the way, loved the picture too.

Another cracking poem in your series about the months and their attributes. It is a rich descriptive piece and as crisp as the dewy morning you so aptly describe in your opening stanza. It is skillfully written and contains a lot of clever alliterations. Very enjoyable. Thoroughly worthy of the cherries.

Hi Rhiannon
Hi Rhiannon
This is a very lovely word picture of the month. I really do think you should make room on your calendar for your poetry. Make the numbers smaller.
